A rave pashmina is a large, lightweight scarf that ravers wear at shows and festivals. People wear one as a scarf, a hood or a shawl, use it to stay warm when the night gets cold, and use it for some cover from sun, wind and dust at outdoor events.

What is a rave pashmina?

It is a festival scarf, big enough to wrap around your shoulders or use as a small blanket, in a bold color or print. Our Basic Solid, Nu Wave Paisley and Rainbow Ombre styles run about 71 to 79 inches long and 26 to 28 inches wide, depending on the style. The Nu Wave Paisley, Techno and Head Banger styles have a tassel fringe.

The name comes from traditional pashmina, a fine goat wool traditionally woven into shawls in Kashmir. Rave pashminas borrow the name and the shape. Our Basic Solid and Rainbow Ombre styles, for example, are listed as a polyester and viscose blend.

What is the point of a rave scarf?

One pash does several jobs over a long night:

  • Warmth. Outdoor shows get cold after dark, and a pash is an easy extra layer over a rave outfit.
  • Sun, wind and dust. It gives you some cover at outdoor events.
  • A place to sit. Spread it out when you want to sit on the grass between sets.
  • Style. A bright color or print finishes an outfit, and you can wave it in the crowd so your friends can find you.

Our product listings describe several of these: a scarf, a head wrap, or a blanket for chilly nights or for the ground.

How do you wear a pashmina at a rave?

Three ways cover most of a night.

The shawl. Open the pash out and drape it over your shoulders, or wrap it around them and hold the ends in front. This is the easiest way to warm up between sets.

The hood. Drape the pash over your head with the middle of one long edge across your forehead, cross the two ends under your chin, then wrap them back around your neck and tuck them in.

The face cover. Wrap the pash around your neck like a scarf, then pull the top edge up over your nose and mouth and tuck the ends in. Pull it down again when the air clears.

You can also simply knot it around your neck, tie it around your waist, or keep it in your bag until you need it.

Do people wear pashminas to raves?

Yes. Festival checklists suggest one as a scarf for warmth, a hood to block dust or a picnic blanket, and we carry them as a collection of their own. They suit outdoor and overnight events best, where it gets colder as the night goes on.

Are rave pashminas for men too?

Yes. Many of ours are listed as unisex, including the Nu Wave Paisley and our black pashminas with white lettering.

Those black pashminas carry a genre name, so you can wear your favorite sound. The Techno and Head Banger styles each have white lettering on black fabric with a tassel fringe, and their listings describe wearing them as a scarf, a headwrap, over your shoulders or as a blanket on the ground.

How do you pick a rave pashmina?

Start with the outfit. A solid color works with almost anything, while a paisley or ombre print becomes the main piece of the look. A few things to check on the listing:

  • Size. A longer, wider pash makes a better blanket and a fuller hood. Many of our listings give the measurements.
  • Color. Our Basic Solid comes in six colors and the Nu Wave Paisley in seven, so it is easy to match a set or a crew.
  • Fabric and care. Check the material and care lines on the listing.

Solid or print decides the whole outfit A solid color works with almost anything you already own. A paisley or ombre print becomes the main piece of the look, so the rest of the outfit has to step back for it.

How do you wash a rave pashmina?

Follow the care line on the listing. For the styles above, that means hand wash cold and air dry. After a dusty weekend, shake it out first, then wash it before you pack it away.

Common questions

Is a rave pashmina the same as a real pashmina?

Not usually. A traditional pashmina is made from fine goat wool, and most scarves sold for raves are not, even though they use the name. Our Basic Solid and Rainbow Ombre, for example, are a polyester and viscose blend.

What else should I bring with my pashmina?

Comfortable shoes and something to trade. Our guide to festival shoes and our guide to kandi bracelets cover both, and our guides to what to wear to a rave and what men wear to a rave cover the rest of the outfit.
